6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7 NLT
I realized recently that I was afraid of the peace of God. Like, literally butterflies in the stomach nervous. Fear is more than a spirit in my life; it’s a family trait. The knots, the imaginations, the playing out of scenes in the mind, and more. But as I have been turning over to the Father the things I cannot control, I am becoming aware of His peace. It’s real, y’all.
Waking up with a quiet mind and gradually less panic. Peaceful to the point of no worry.
Then I thought — all those times I thought I sensed your peace. What was that? At best, it was a reprieve from fear. But now, I see how fear-full I have been, how much “real estate” fear takes in our souls, and how truly liberating is His peace. Philippians 4:7 KJV has warned me for most of my life about a peace that passes all understanding. I am seeing that now. His peace IS protection for the heart and mind as we live IN Him.
Bereans, we are IN Christ. Things get tough and we have to do hard things, but God’s peace is the strategy. When I started feeling the peace in real life, I stopped asking a lot of questions.
When Lord?
Why Lord?
Where Lord?
Who Lord?
What are we gonna do, Lord?
And I started getting honest. Lord, the fear is about to choke me. I want to trust you, but these things are bigger than me and I can’t see you. Have you ever been lulled back to sleep from a prayer like this? A frantic prayer? I have. And I would awake a few minutes later surrounded by peace. I would wake for the day literally scratching my head.
But Lord, I worry. I panic. I tell you I am afraid. What will we talk about now? Ha! I laughed with the Father about how I’d cuddled fear and worry and tried to confront big things in my strength.
I am growing to trust His peace. That’s the point. I am growing into a life of peace that rolls onto Him the burdens and casts upon Him every care. Peace is not a joke or horrible trick. Peace is a protector, our protector. My heart has room for vision, hope and all good things. And they won’t be choked out by fear. My awareness is changing; I can accept and apply God’s love without fear of penalty or judgment. In peace, I love, seek and serve Him. In peace, I see my life as a shared venture with Him. Things are, on the whole, full of more possibility.
If you’ve lived at the opposite extreme of peace and now find yourself leery of the calm that flows from God, be at peace. Trust that answered prayers come to you too. They come in peace and minister to you, even if you cannot change the big thing that needs resolve. We do our best while we live in peace — not under a cloud, or fear, or heaviness. His yoke is easy, and the peace reminds us that we are with the one who is in complete control. And we are in the best position to take life as it comes.
Selah, and love to all.
