Most days I listen to news/talk radio on my drive to/from work. This week, on one of those routes, I heard a segment about the American man killed fighting with extremists. The commentator interviewed a “scholar” or “expert” on extremists and asked how this American might “switch sides”, and what inspired him to act in this way.
The scholar talked about possible personality weaknesses or social awkwardness that maybe made this man vulnerable and how he likely wanted some
with which to identify. These two words together struck me and I struggled to hear the rest of the interview. My mind was working.
I asked myself if I want to be EXTREME about what God asked me to do. Did I want to be intoxicated by my purpose? I’m still mulling it over, but I think my answer is no. I do not want my purpose to overtake me, and be the impetus behind my words and actions.
I’d rather God Himself overtake me. I’d rather be in awe of Him alone, be inspired and influenced by His love for me and us and His truth and mercy along with purpose. I do not need a cause to rally behind to give me boldness outside of righteousness, and push me to isolate others with extreme tactics.
Remember what the angel said to Mary? That seems appropriate here… Luke 1:35 KJV
And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
The holy thing should not intoxicate us. It’s all about the overshadowing, and then honoring the divine result. In John 4:13-14, Jesus did not promise intoxication unto extremist tendencies to/for those who drink from His waters. He promised that if we drank His living water we won’t thirst again, and His water would become a well in us to constantly experience eternal life. He guaranteed He would be enough…that we would be satisfied. A satisfied person stays connected to the source of her peace. Selah.
Let’s root ourselves in the truly intoxicating Presence of the Father and our purpose of worship and praise extended into word and deed. Away with trends and extremist strategies in the Body of Christ. Let’s be sober and stay focused on His agenda.
Just my thoughts. Love to all.
