The Transformed Will (meditation)
Have you ever spent time considering how your relationship with God impacts how you make decisions?
We understand free will is a gift, but what drives our choices — God’s Word or the prevailing influence of culture? I want to share a portion of Psalm 119, and encourage us to look closer at how our free will) is transformed by anchoring our right of choice in His Word.
May your grace come to me, Adonai, your salvation as you promised;
then I will have an answer for those who taunt me; for I trust in your word.
Don’t take away completely my power to speak the truth; for I put my hope in your rulings;
and I will keep your Torah always, forever and ever.
I will go wherever I like, for I have sought your precepts.
I will speak of your instructions even to kings without being ashamed.
I will delight myself in your mitzvot (commandments), which I have loved.
I will lift my hands to your mitzvot, which I love; and I will meditate on your laws. (vv. 41-48, CJB)
Verse 45 comes across as spoken by a believer with such confidence in God, and so transformed by constant exposure to His Will/Word, that he is free by God’s way. “I will go wherever I like” is not a rebellious announcement. It is quite the reverse; it is an announcement of transformation rooted in God’s Word. I will speak without fear. I will delight and lift my hands to God’s Word, and meditate on it, because I love it!
Meditation Question: Where is the root of your will?
Where we root our will or power of choice is the driving force of our lives. Struggle with God’s will creates difficulty delighting in His way(s), and skews choice as a restricting and limiting temptation. The one who roots her will in God’s Word, with love and focus, and meditation, escapes the snare of self and the tether of the culture of the day.
Read that passage again and investigate the root of your choices (your will). If you lack love for God’s Word, ask Him to “charge” your hunger and thirst for His way. Then, decide what you WILL do — or, how you will choose.
