Love is not Dead
Tonight I attended a preview of a movie coming out next month called God’s Not Dead. It is based on a true account of a freshman college student who in his first semester defended his faith in front of the class with an atheist professor. This professor, angry at God because of a childhood loss, has the class write “God is Dead” on a sheet of paper and sign it to 1) create consensus and 2) avoid the “God exists” debate.
This movie is all about how different people stand up for their faith in different ways…through their decisions. We even got a little Duck Dynasty in the movie…which was a great treat!
I’m sharing because I thought about our focus on our hearts and love walks this month. No, God is not dead. It suggests that our love should not be dead either. Yes, people are watching us…but what are they watching us do? At any given moment? There’s always a chance to show love. Tonight the movie reminded me of small ways to do better.
The pastor in the movie gave great counsel to the student before he made his argument to the class. He said, “Don’t try to be clever. Be content to tell the truth.”
My, wouldn’t that work for love?! No antics. No extra. No dilution. No violins. No foundation-less fuzzies. Just love. Just patience. Just kindness. Just humility and gentleness. Just loyalty, covering, and visible trust in our God.
The preacher in the movie said something else — “It’s very simple. It’s just not easy.”
