Inspiration is more than feeling. It is the fuel for doing. It is the breath of fresh air that revives one to make and to create and to get things done. I cannot talk about love or think about love and not consider Rocky and Adrian. Yes, you read that right. My family and people who really know me are shaking their heads right now.
While there are moments in all but one of the Rocky movies where Adrian inspires Rocky, this is the one I want to share from Rocky II. Rocky was injured and at risk of going blind if he fought again. Adrian was pregnant and went back to work to help out. The stress put her in the hospital, where she spent a long while in a coma. When she woke up, she and Rocky saw the baby for the first time and Rocky offered to find another way to support them all instead of fighting. Prior to the coma Adrian insisted he not fight. When she woke up, though, here is what she said —
Adrian: There’s one thing I want you to do for me. Rocky: What? Adrian: (motions for Rocky to lean in closer) Come here. Rocky: What? Adrian: Win. (cue the music) Win!Watch the 47-second clip here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kPgPrtOxvK4
In all but one of the movies there is this moment when Adrian’s faith pushes this man to do what the world calls impossible. The strength of her love inspires him to be the best, to be a champion.
We should all have one person who when they say we can do it, then we cue the music in our lives and are all systems go! When they say, “Win,” we feel like we can run through troops and leap over walls. We hear their voices in our heads when we encounter obstacles, and their love so inspires us that we speak to mountains and increase in faith.
These people are gifts. If you do not have an inspiration, then I pray that kind of person enters your life. Within the Body of Christ, though, there should be and remain living inspiration. “And let us keep paying attention to one another, in order to spur each other on to love and good deeds” (Hebrews 10:24, CJB).
A slight adjustment of perspective shows us that we are surrounded by inspiration. We live our lives by the faith of the Son of God who loved us and gave Himself for us (Galatians 2:20). What else is there to do, then?
Let’s inspire, and let’s be inspired!
