Love Challenges the Human Perspective

Kefa [Peter] took him aside and began rebuking him, “Heaven be merciful, Lord! By no means will this happen to you!” But Yeshua [Jesus] turned his back on Kefa, saying, “Get behind me, Satan! You are an obstacle in my path, because your thinking is from a human perspective, not from God’s perspective!”

Matthew 16:22-23 (CJB)

Jesus explains to the disciples what He must go through and suffer in Jerusalem. Then there is this short and powerful exchange between He and Peter.

I take note of two things. First, Peter took Jesus aside to privately give his sincere, well-intended and misdirected rebuke. Second, Jesus turned around to face all the disciples and create a teachable moment.

None of the disciples were present at his baptism and announcement. Thus, Jesus made repeated announcements of His identity and purpose during His time with them.  Likewise, most of the people in your life (and inner circle) today were absent when you came to saving faith, received your call, and first understood your purpose and message.

Sometimes it is necessary to repeat “God’s perspective” to those who are closest to you, and know you by carnal knowledge.  For some, time and history with you cause them to speak from the “human perspective”.  They may mean well, but at the moment they do not see you (your life is hidden with Christ in God, after all — Colossians 3:3).

So, make the announcement when you need to speak God’s perspective. Our love for these Peter types refuses the rebuke of lowering us to the human perspective. God’s love through us speaks God’s perspective. (And Peter can’t go to the mount with you and see you transform without this conversation — see Matthew 17)
