He who conceals an offense promotes love, but he who harps on it can separate even close friends. (CJB)
He that covereth transgression seeketh love; but he that repeateth a matter separateth very friends. (KJV)
He who covers and forgives and offense seeks love, but he who repeats or harps on a matter separates even close friends. (AMP)
Why is it that when we are wronged, or when we believe we are wronged, we want to broadcast it? And that, most times, in half-truths? What is it about being hurt that makes some of us want to talk, talk, talk?
There are many possible answers. One is that as many of us reading relate to God through Western church conditioning and not in a sincere effort to establish context. The bigger lesson here is not about sin, but about the Body of Christ learning to cover and forgive.
Several years ago I had the privilege to teach a two-part series on covering. At that time the biggest problem to address was the willingness of family (natural and spiritual) to throw each other under the bus. Today, that problem expands just a bit as some are willing to throw others in front of moving trains and out of airplanes from 40,000 feet.
Still the solution is the same: the love of God.
A Strong’s Concordance word study on covereth (3680), transgression (6588), seeketh (1245), love (160), repeateth (8138), matter (1697), separateth (6504), and friends (441) yields the following as a possible paraphrase:
He that conceals a sin desires love; but he that perverts or duplicates a matter spoken of severs familiar associations.
We are praying for women’s hearts this month each Tuesday in February — 4th, 11th, 18th, and 25th. Join us at 8PM Central (9PM Eastern) and agree in prayer as we cover women everywhere with 1 Corinthians 13. Let the love revolution increase and continue!
