Know What You Need (devotional)
I was going to keep quiet, until I saw these Twitter posts by Pastor Jason Nelson (@pastorjnelson):
A mentor’s purpose is to impart wisdom gained from experience to one who desires to get where they are. Be available to recv!
When a REAL #mentor tells you that more work is needed, that not #HATE. It’s #LOVE trying to keep you from making a mess.
Don’t let #EGO close your ears to #SOUNDAdvice. Many train wrecks were avoided because a #mentor said “Not yet”.
This was on my mind last night, and so I decided to put my domino on the table.
While working your strategy for the year, re-assess your wise counsel corner. Please, do it for your own good. People are still screaming for a mentor…honestly, I cannot believe this movement is still trending. It’s a good step in the right direction, but too many have parked at the “my-mentor-is-my-be-all-end-all”. Not so.
A mentor helps pull out of us the “raw goods” not yet developed. They invest in us. They spend the time and work with us. They help to mold and bring us into our own (not their carbon copy). For some this morphs into a spiritual parent/child relationship, but this is not the intent of mentoring.
A coach is more of a guide when we know what we’ve got and are working the plan, but need some pushing and pointing and prodding. Coaches are in it for the short-term — focused and intense training for a specific purpose. If we need sharper vision, keener insight, more strength in our core, etc., then we need a coach or a trainer.
Some of us simply need accountability. That is, someone(s) to remind us of the goal and “spur us on to good works” (Hebrews 10:24).
Wherever we are and whatever we need, the Lord is faithful to send us teachers and voices to assist us — with clear, sound, Godly input. Beware of the one who needs to be needed and so keeps you in the dark with mysterious, dark sayings. Revelation is to be revealed, not dangled like a carrot for an exchange of service or favors.
Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. Then the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Philippians 4:6-7
When you discover your need, and God sends the vessel with the voice to help you birth progress, then BUY THE TRUTH. Buy in. Get all the way in, with no compromise. And let the transformation begin. When you do, the result will be of all things most beautiful.
