The Root of Wisdom
The root of a thing is the core or the heart of a thing. In the human soul it is the firmness or permanence of a thing (see Strong’s H8328, from root H8327). Let’s add a little depth to our strange woman study, and look at Proverbs 12:3, 12.
Both verses reference the “root of the righteous”. I want to apply this to our embrace of God’s wisdom, as we make the case that it should be our root, or the permanent weight that firmly sets our souls. They read,
A man shall not be established by wickedness: but the root of the righteous shall not be moved…The wicked desireth the net of evil [men]: but the root of the righteous yieldeth fruit.
Isn’t that wonderful?! Our hearts are not subject forever to division and uncertainty because we can be stable. We can be rooted…by wisdom, and that root in us shall not be moved. That’s a promise. Wisdom is not the only part of the Godly root in us, but it is the principal thing (Proverbs 4:7) as well as the alternative to being strange so we emphasize it now.
Also, righteous roots produce Godly fruit. What is the fruit of wisdom? I want to connect Proverbs 12:3, 12 to Proverbs 2:10-11. When wisdom enters the heart and knowledge is pleasant to the soul (2:10), then the fruit are discretion (purpose) and understanding (discernment and perception).
Think a moment about some of the wisest people you know. Aren’t they also some of the most grounded? I marvel at a few select people, how their yay is consistently yay and their nay is consistently nay, and how they don’t seem to have many crises (or waverings) of faith or belief. They have a root of wisdom.
As we seek the Lord individually, and as part of the local church community, let’s remember our responsibility to our own souls. Root check, anyone? Where there are weak roots, let’s give the Word’s wisdom a place to rest in our glad hearts.
