The Character of Mercy

Here’s a short recap of this powerful lesson!

There is no reward for selective mercy. Consider Luke 6:36–it falls in the middle of a discourse on loving enemies, judging others and bearing fruit. The great reward and sonship is ours when we are kind to the unthankful and the evil.

Be ye therefore merciful, as Your Father is merciful.

We need God’s mercy to die to ourselves and to reign with Him. Consider Romans 12:1. To sacrifice our lives as holy and acceptable offerings, we do it through, by way of, and by means of God’s mercies. How we give or limit our lives to others is directly related to our understanding of God’s mercies to us.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.

The character of mercy protects others from penalty. Consider Lamentations 3:22-23. The function of mercy is not giving people a pass. The function of mercy is preserving another person. We should remember this function as God’s kind of mercy, and as a way of life. It is when we see the value in another person, and show mercy to protect them from what might be our wrath or frustration or lashing out.

It is of the Lord’s mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.

Mercy is part of the answer to the prayer to be more like God. It is an indication of Christlikeness. Consider Colossians 3:12-13. Literally, bowels of mercy is pity and compassion in the intestines. It is when we dress ourselves from the inside.

Put on therefore, as the elect of God, holy and beloved, bowels of mercies, kindness, humbleness of mind, meekness, long-suffering; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, if any man have a quarrel against any: even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye.

Father, make us agents of mercy. Help us develop bowels of mercies, Your brand of mercies that preserves and does not consume others. By these mercies we willingly lay down our lives and submit our bodies for Your use. We want to be merciful as you are merciful.
